What to fish for in Tokyo Bay this October

Tokyo Bay is one of Japan's great fishing grounds. The range of species is remarkable, and each season brings a different kind of fishing. Come and taste the finest Edomae ingredients for yourself!

The basics

Size: Mostly around 20-30cm. Fish approaching 40cm are prized as large aji.
Typical catch: Roughly 20-50 per angler. Numbers come readily, which suits a first boat trip.
What it is like: You hold the school in place with ground bait and keep your rig inside that cloud. The rhythm of feeding and depth control decides the catch.

Handling: The hard scutes near the tail can cut your hand. Chill the fish thoroughly in ice to keep the quality on the way home.

Tokyo Bay operators talk about "kin-aji", or golden horse mackerel. Some describe the fish off Kurihama as superbly fatty. Eating it straight from the boat is part of why it is a bay staple.

Nogeya actually runs trips branded "LT kin-aji", and Urayasu Yoshinoya lists horse mackerel as a year-round target. "Kin-aji" is not an official unified brand name; it is the name operators and anglers use around Tokyo Bay. On a good day, do not stop at sashimi. Use the whole fish: namero, fried aji, and miso soup from the frame.

Because it can be targeted all year, it is an easy first recommendation whenever recent catches exist and you are unsure what to book.
